Chubb Renown Safe
The art of successful safemaking is to know your enemy. Continuous and extensive research is necessary so that new developments in methods of attack can be anticipated in time for a suitable barrier or device to be included in the safemaking process. Though today’s criminal uses sophisticated weapons and techniques to achieve his aim, it is time, combined with the skill of the safemaker that defeats him. The safemaker’s aim is therefore to put sufficient barriers to confront the burglar so that time runs out for him before he can break the safe.
It is the relentless pursuit of this aim that has made the name of Chubb synonymous with security for over 150 years. The Renown Safe is the result of vastly improved manufacturing techniques which have enabled Chubb to offer a medium range safe that is highly resistant to drills and explosives whilst also giving protection against oxy-acetylene cutting. The barrier material, Chubb’s specially formulated F2 material, combines thermal strength with toughness and high drill resistance.
The Isolator unit, which is unique to Chubb, breaks the connection between bolt throwing handle and bolts every time the safe is locked. This means that the handle can spin quite freely, independently of any part of the mechanism. The system has condensed the lock and bolt mechanisms into a very small area enabling Chubb to protect the vital parts with an expensive and patented drill resistant barrier. Incorporated in the system are a number of “live” and “dead” relocking devices.
Four way moving boltwork and – bolts engaging into body material
The heavy sliding bolts extend from both sides, the top and the bottom of the door to engage right into the barrier material forming the body shell. This ensures that when closed the door becomes an integral part with the body.
A system of interlocking straps ensures that no one set of bolts can be moved independently of the others. Thus an attack to gain control of one set of bolts only serves to set off a relocking device which makes it even more difficult to succeed in opening the door.
Identical outer design disguising safe quality
It is part of Chubb’s security policy to give nothing away to the criminal. For this reason the design and furniture are exactly the same as the Chubb Resolute, Trident and Bankers Treasury safes. By looking at the closed safe it is therefore not possible to determine the quality..
The door is 188 mm (7.4 in) thick overall. Rectangular, it is constructed from outer and inner steel plates continuously welded to form a single structure, which together with a layer of Chubb F2 material, produce a total barrier of 76mm (3in).
In special areas over the door face immediately in front of the locks and locking mechanism, extra protection is incorporated to further strengthen the drill resisting qualities of the door structure. Also included are thermal relocking devices for added protection against flame attack.
The door is hung on hardened steel pivots with hinges of modern design.
Boltwork and Locking
Heavy cylindrical sliding bolts, 38 mm (1.5 in) diameter, extend from all four sides of the door and engage into recesses in the body shell so as to ensure complete solidarity with the body. The number of bolts at each side varies between three and five, according to safe size, whilst there are always two at top and bottom, an important feature in resisting explosive attack.
On turning the key of the Chubb 8-lever keylock or locking the Chubb 4-code keyless combination lock, the bolt throwing mechanism is disconnected from the bolt operating handle.
Any attempt to force an entry by dislodging the lock (particularly by an explosive charge in the keyhole) is thereby defeated since, with the drive disengaged, there is no means of retracting the 4-way main bolts. Relocking devices are designed into the mechanism to ensure that the bolts remain positively locked in the extended position under various types of attack.
The outer body is constructed from 5 mm steel plate using the latest forming process coupled with modern welding-techniques. The inner lining is of 10 mm steel plate similarly constructed. The outer body material is continued into the door aperture. It is joined to the inner lining behind the bolts which engage through the body and lining plates into the formidable barrier of Chubb F2 material filling the body, and providing an overall minimum thickness of 105 mm (4.13in).
Design and Finish
Light and dark grey enamels are used in a high quality finish, other colours being available at extra cost. The three spoked bolt throwing handle is satin chrome plated to blend with the stainless steel control mounting panel, with escutcheons or keyless combination lock dials to match.
Keyless Combination Locks
The use of these locks is strongly recommended. They can be fitted in place of, or in addition to, a keylock. Each lock is capable of 100,000,000 changes of code.
The operation of the lock is simple and quick. The alteration of code can be effected in a few minutes without any prior reference to Chubb. Being operated by a code, the possibility of keys being copied, lost, stolen or compromised is eliminated. As the code can be changed readily and easily complete security can be maintained over a safe whenever there is a change of staff.
Elimination of a keyhole, a ready-made receptacle for explosives, reduces the possibility of explosive attack. Refinements, such as a dial checklock and anti-observation shield, can be fitted at extra cost.
The fittings supports are welded to the sides of the lining, the fittings being designed so that they can be adjusted at 27 mm (1.06 in) intervals. The drawers are of steel secured by a keylock with keys in duplicate.
The drawers are mounted between two shelves secured to the supports by vertical clips. They are supplied either as one full-width drawer or two drawers side by side. The shelves are of sheet steel flanged and secured to the support by clips.
The timelock operates independently of any other form of locking. Pre-set to go off guard at a selected time, the lock prevents a safe from being opened until the correct time is reached, even if the other locks have been unlocked. The Chubb mechanical timelock has two movements to preclude non-operation in the event of a breakdown of one of the movements, as it is only necessary for one movement to operate the lock. Space does not permit the fitting of a timelock in a Chubb Renown Safe size 2215. All other sizes are prepared to receive a timelock.
Cupboards are constructed of sheet steel suitably reinforced and secured by keylocking with keys in duplicate. The internal height of the cupboard can be made to suit the client’s requirements at extra cost.
